about

Singer-songwriter Thalib Razi's debut solo album The Fire Inside is a journey of 10 songs inspired by traditional African music from Mali to Ethiopia. The West African Sahel and the Horn of East Africa unite in this “World folk rock” album centered around African guitar and oud sounds.

A multi-instrumentalist, Thalib Razi composed and recorded all of the instrumentals heard in this album, to accompany his singing on themes of nature, spirituality, love, life, and struggle. He aims for these youthful songs to honor their elders, their inspirations - the Islamic spiritual songs of Moroccan gnawa and Ethiopian manzuma, the elegant Takamba dance music of the Sahara, Somali kaban music, Oromo folk songs, and others - just as he hopes to honor the elders who sang them, from Ali Birra to Ali Farka Toure.

Have a listen, and feel the crackling warmth of traditions that go all the way back to the first spark of the fire inside...

Acknowledgements:
Although this is a self-produced solo album, and I composed, arranged, and recorded all of the content, it didn't happen in a vacuum. Thanks to the Sanctuaries, Crescent Moon Nights, and Muslim Writer's Collective for providing me a space to grow artistically. Thanks as well to close friends, fellow musicians, family, and loved ones (especially my dear wife) for inspirations, feedback, and encouragement. Special thanks to Uncle Jamal for help with some lyrics in Afaan Oromo. And above all, all praise is to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.
